In Memory of Van Wastell

I miss my friend Van. Knowing that I won’t get the phone call, that he’s up in SF and wants to shoot a couple of games of pool, sucks. I used to have a guest room in my old house, he use to stay with me and my cat loved him. He would wake up and play guitar or my keyboard, and that’s what would wake me up. Van was an amazing person. We shared a lot of good times, and I’m grateful to have had him in my life.

And those memories are the ones I’ll hold on to.

Fuck man, we lost another good one.. Van was a good friend of mine and a great human being all around. Not too many people have been born with such natural style on a skateboard, coupled with such a great personality. I will miss his goofy attitude, funny antics, and his amazing skateboarding . Van will obviously be missed by all of us here at deluxe and by skateboarders all over the world. Our hearts go out to his family and loved ones, for they are the ones that are impacted the hardest by this tragedy.

    Friday evening when returning home from the ASR show and while exiting the sliding doors of the Oakland Airport and excitedly looking past the sidewalk for my wife in our seafoam green Hyundai anxious to get home and put the feet up…I was listening to a voicemail message from a friend and I knew something was wrong.

    I called my friend right away, and tried to make sense of his message…we where both distressed and the call was not the easiest to comprehend, as the call ended I had just found out the world had lost another young talented skateboarder, Van Wastell.

    His pro board from Krooked Skateboards was just released a little over a week ago, so he was well on his way to continuing on down the streets supported by his love for skateboarding.

    Van was amazing, and will never be forgotten.

    I didn’t know you. I probably never would have met you, but it doesn’t even matter. You are a skater and so am I. That brings us closer together than most people ever will be in this short life. Even if we met randomly skating down the street we would have something to say to each other. I feel that bond with you, as I am sure every skater does, so it is with great sadness that I never got to witness your skating in person that I say good bye. We lost one of our own, and that kind of pain never goes away.

    I’m sure everyone was, but from the moment I heard I’ve changed, I’ve dedicated and did everything for the honour of van. I never once met him, but he just seems like he would great you with open arms and was very considerate of other skaters.
    He was a blessing to watch, one of the only skaters I would have done anything to have style like his… so effortless and just unique and timeless.
    My friends and I have always showed a huge liking to van’s approach and there is certain things like watching his and only his part in naughty to go skate too, for months.
    Just a terrible lose and you can feel when watching him, he just lives and breaths skating, a real old soul, like he’s from a different time in skating, where natural ability was key.
    No joke, his ads and parts where far better than anyone at his age.
    he also had a way of riding for the sickest company’s(krooked, consolidated, indy, spitfire, etc.) you knew they were chasing him, because real hardcore skaters understand his style and finesse.
    his logic 9 part is the only logic part that matters, seriously.

    his songs were always top notch.
    just an epic motherfucker.
    he’ll be more than missed.
    he’ll live forever in the hearts of real skaters like him.
    we love you, and I’ll continue to emulate your style, because your my inspiration.

    growing up skating with the Wastell family in Simi Valley was a highlight of my youth. To later get the honor of working with Van as a friend and a fellow skateboarder always meant so much to me. He comes from a line of talent that in many ways is untouchable. I truly miss him and my heart feels heavy just thinking about this loss. Van I hope you are out ripping in the heavens above! You will be missed by all and you have left an ever lasting impression on all that you touched, you helped make skateboarding GREAT. RIP Van.

    I just found out a few minutes ago about the passing of the ripper we knew as Van Wastell. Just thinking of it makes me feel sad in my chest, even though I had never met Van in person or seen him skate. I will always remember Van for his sick style and talented skating but also the impressions I got from him as a person. He will be sorely missed in the skate world. I will always think of Van next time I go out and push around town, keep on the Krooked side Van!

    Well i had a pretty fuckin cool birthday until i heard that you passed away that day. (sep. 4th)

    I wish i would have gotten to see you get nice on your board in person, but at least i was fortunate enough to see it through all of your coverage.

    You honestly seemed like one of the realist, most down to earth guys ever, and when i heard the news, i felt like i was a friend or a cousin of yours and was immediately torn.

    I never met you, but your video parts were enough to make me in awe of your amazing style and seemingly quirky personality. The impact you and your skating has left on my friends and I is tremendous (to the point where we barely realize). I remember filming a line and watching the footage back and seeing that the bottom of my dickies came up pretty far as i was pushing and you could see all of my eras and my shin-high socks. As we were watching the footage back, I remember the first thing i said was, “Check out my Van steaz.” It was your style and amazing bag of tricks that I will miss most. I was so grateful for you when i found out that you were going pro because for what ever reason you held off on it. Well you made it man! Congratulations and thank you for inspiring my skateboarding for as long as i live. RIP.

    above the text is a picture i took of van wastell and my homeboy anthony when vans came through plus skateshop in fort walton florida a couple months ago…i remember my friend keith was bumming cigarettes off him and we were all laughing and having a good time,for that whole hour i remember that he really never stopped smiling which is a really rare thing to come by-its one thing to lose a great skater,but its that much harder to lose a great person.and van was definately in that category.im really glad i got to meet him,but it really upsets me that he left us before his time.RIP van

    I never really followed his skating, but the footage I saw of him was always interesting and different from the skateboarding you see every day. His part in the Krooked video was the first part I saw of him and it really opened my eyes to a whole new way of shredding. Rest in peace Van, and thank you for all of your hard work.

    the first footage i ever saw of Van was from his consolidated days and even when he was like maybe a freshmen in high school you could tell he was gonna go far. he just looked so comfortable on a skateboard all throughout his time here as one of us; a skateboarder like you and me. its just a tragedy that his untimely death occurred far too early in his life and at a time when he was really blossoming as a skater. its always a terrible feeling to hear about a skateboarder dying, not because of fear of the same fate, but because there is a certain camaraderie between all of us that everyone else will never feel and understand. my heart goes out to his family and friends.

    I met Van Wastell at a deluxe demo at innerspace skatepark, it was a few years ago, he was newer on the scene and just had a part in Krooked Kronicles.Van skated some at the demo but didn’t seem to into the scene but still managed to flow effortlessly on the mini ramp and cruise the rest of the park with his loose style. I was leaving with a friend and saw van drinking a beer waiting for the rest of the team. I took a second to tell him how much I really enjoyed his part and how I hoped he had another one soon. Van seemed genuinely stoked someone knew who he was and said thanks.
    I always looked forward to any photos or clips after that and his go with the flow feel was something I could identify with.He always picked different spots and tricks , never staying on any given path.
    He is missed and will always be remembered, wish I had the chance to skate with him,i get inspiration from his photos and footage daily.

    Though i’d never met Van, i had always enjoyed watching him skate and it wasn’t until he was gone that i truly realized what he had done for skateboarding, whether it be a perfect backside flip or thowing a baby into the sky.     You never can be prepared for such a trdgedy like this. It always hits you when you least expect it, without rhyme or reason. They always say that something good always comes from something bad. In this case it helps everyone realize how much they were inspired by Van. It shows you how much he meant to the skateboarding world, and it helps bring skateboarders closer together. It helps to push skaters to live life to the fullest and cherish everyday on and off their skateboards.

    Van Wastell was one of the greateset skateboarders, period. He was known and respected around the world. Van was one of my favourites and a true inspriation to watch. I never met him, he never even came came to the country where I live, but I can say in no uncertain terms that he was loved and respected here. I live in Johannesburg, South Africa and the fact that I appreciated Van and many others that I know did too, is a testament to the far reaching effect he had on this world in the short time that he was with us.     If people asked me who looks good on a skateboard - who truly has style - Van Wastell would almost always occupy my top ten list. I could always tell that he was enjoying his time on a skateboard and that made it an even more delight to watch him skate,

    I will always remember the backing he had from fans who would always stress “Turn Van pro, Gonz!” or “I’m boycotting Krooked until he’s pro!” I became a fan of his skating the moment I saw him do the five-o varial heel in Krooked Kronichles and would be lying if said I wasn’t one of the people mad at his am status.

    Van was a skater’s skater and I’m sure anyone who has ever met him or seen him skate are glad to witness such a rad individual.

    I was talking to John Bradford and everything seemed good until Raymond called him and told him what had happened. It was something i really couldn’t see being true until Torey had told me the same thing Raymond had told john. This is yet another disappointing and sad lost.     hi , my name is seth , and i live in london , and van was a good friend of mine. i got the shocking news of his passing on Saturday last week second hand while im over here sd california . i couldnt believe it . i had just got an e mail from van 2 weeks previous with the graphics of his new pro board attached. i asked him if he would be in cali when i was over , and he said he was taking a trip to berlin and wouldnt be here unfortunately , i mailed him back and told him i would see him soon. van always called when he was in london to hang out and skate , i will always remember him as a kind friend and a great skater who passed way to early . i will miss you mate , rip , seth

    hi , my name is seth and i live in london , and i was a good friend of van . i heard the sad news of his passing second hand on saturday last week while staying with friends in sd california . i was shocked and upset . i had just had received an e mail from van just 2 weeks previously with the new graphic of his pro board attached . i replied and told how pleased i was for him , and asked him if he would be in cali while i was here , he replied back and said he would be on a trip to berlin , i then told him cool , and see you soon. van would always call me when he was in london to skate or hang out . i will remember him as a kind friend , and a great skater who passed way to early. i will miss you mate , seth

    I remember reading an interview of Van a long time ago in transworld. I remember thinking that i would love to skate with that guy because he seems so chill and down to earth. His style on a skateboard was amazing, and he always seemed to just be having fun. His skating always inspired me and even though I didnt know him at all, it sucks knowing he wont be around anymore.     I first met Van when he was about fifteen or so. We had a lot of mutual friends which eventually turned into our little skate crew. The thing I remember most was just being astonished to meet such an intelligent and articulate kid. Over the years we all shared many a session. So many have been flashing in my mind as of late, and all i can do is cry and smile. Van, I fuckin miss you man. I have so much respect & admiration for you as skateboarder, and even more so as a friend. For the rest of my life, when i push down the street, I will be pushing for you homie!     When Van would walk into my office he’d have a new, stolen, Starbucks gift for me (coffee mugs, CD’s, DVD’s, even a french press). My collection is quite impressive, thank you again Van. Friday September 5th will forever be engraved in my memory as a day of sadness and confusion. After my cell phone was brought back to life with a charger, hearing new text and voicemail notifications beeping frantically I realized something was odd. The text messages and voicemails were all from Van’s other sponsors. It was 5:30 pm when I called Jim Thiebaud back. His voice was calm but I sensed there was something very wrong he was about to tell me. And then he told me. I experienced an empty void in my heart, sadness and sorrow, anger and confusion. Something I hadn’t experienced in 13 years, since the passing of my sister. I will always remember meeting the kid who, at age 15, did frontside slappy’s better than I, though I’d been doing them for nearly his entire life span. Van, where ever it is you are now, I hope there’s red curb and a tall can. I’m gonna fucking miss you…

    Ever since I received the news my mind has been bombarded with all of the memories: trips the good times and the the bad time knowing that you are not going to call me up to disappear with you down to puerto vallarta to share waves and new good times. No more calls out of the blue and you showing up at the house kicking it with my kids you are and will always be part of my family. I have met many people over the years and not many have had the impact and became such an important part of my life as you man. It is hard to write this because it brings so many more memories, seeing all of the photos burnett put up of you on the thrasher site, being on all of those trips with you 100% realness at its best, it is not fucking right.     I met Van a very long time ago thru his brother Kurt.He must have been 6 or 7 years old then and I had not seen him in years but I was hearing a lot about his skating thru mutual friends in the SFV. In 2003 I went to the Bootleg premiere in Hollywood and as I got out of my car I hear someone yell at me “Its been a long time” and I look over and its a grown up Van Wastell on crutches. I couldn’t believe that he remembered me after all those years that had passed. I can’t sit here and say he was a super close friend but when ever I would see him from that day forward he would always make time to talk with me and catch up. His style on a skateboard will always be admired and he will never be forgotten as the great person he was. I will miss our encounters my friend…

    I feel I have to say something… what does it mean when you’re instantly saddened and shocked when you hear of someone you never knew personally dies…

    I know I always dug van because he had a quality that you don’t see in skating and he completed Krooked he was the soul. Krooked is soul. They encapsulate everything i want to see on a skateboard and i expect in skating. Van had a flow with his style, as a person it seemed like an unassuming punk spirit that i so f–king admire and that so many few people have around. About the time gnar gnar came out it seemed like he was really coming into his style and kept getting better — “his style”- it was his. I felt he was gonna get recognized and blow up real soon i was so sure of it or at least people would catch on and bite it. He is a year younger than me, it’s intense , it’s unfinished. I can’t help but tear up when i read these comments people who know him have left about him on here and other sites. I will miss him but My heart really goes out to his family and friends right now.

    God I think I was in 8th grade when I saw my first Van Wastell clip. It was in Streets of SF video during the Junipero Serra school section. He 5-0 the top of the bank down this little angled ledge of the bank. From that day on Van became one of my favorite skaters. He skated like a pro

    When I got the phone call Friday Afternoon my first reaction was strictly denial, then the acceptance led to the question of why Van?, and lastly into an overwhelming sadness. My heart and thoughts are with Eddie, Kurt, and the rest of the Great Wastell family. Van was a true inspiration as a skater and as a person to all.     With skateboarding getting bigger everyday, the true spirit of skating is only getting smaller. Embraced by retarded parents and energy drinks and horribly scripted television shows, the sheep are outnumbering the skate rats. Emulation rather than originality. Skateboarding is meant to be a hive of creativity, and its the skaters who ought to keep it alive. Ive never known Van as a person, but i know why he was so important to skateboarding.     One day, i got in from hitting this line with my friends, and we went onto “The Website”, (http://how2skate.com/) and found that a video had been put up under the name of “RIP Van Westall” and we went quiet.

    We checked it out and read the caption, which stated, “You was an awesome skater and you will always be in our memories, RIP.”

    We were all like, What the fuck?! We had only just watched a recent video of him and saw him in ‘Transworld Skateboarding Magazine’ 1 or 2 days before.

    We couldn’t believe it.

    I got a phone call from my friend the next day, who had also heard the sad news.

    I still can’t believe it to this day,

    I am soooo sorry to here about Van. Unfortunately I too had a huge loss in March when I lost my best friend of 24 years, Colin Wagshal. It seems like it’s never gonna get better guys but the only thing that heals this kinda stuff is time, period.

    When fell in love with skating at 12 i learned to ollie and moved onto the kickflip.i practiced for an hour every night for 5 months and still couldnt land it. I felt like giving up skateboarding. Then i saw a van wastelle video. It inspired me to keep skating. His skill his style and his personality was what got me to go out into the freezing cold and skate. i am never happier than when skating. Like he was. R.I.P van wastelle

    I remember seeing his part in Krooked Kronichles. It was instantly amazing. He became one of my favorite skaters to watch. He had amazing style on his board and off. I was phsyched on his pro board being released and was looking forward to seeing more footy of this amazing skater. The day before you died, I had just watched your behind the griptape, and I had also just bought a Krooked Zig Zagger to try to imitate you, although I wouldn’t be anywhere close to your talent. You are the reason I continue to skate the way I do, how you didn’t care what your style looked, and it looked good because of that (my style still is no where near as good as yours). I will never forget our sushi date, and the horrible taste of that warm Saki. But that drink was the complete opposite of the way I felt about you and your priceless and God-gifted personality.     More than ever I’ve been watching Van footage, and looking through old mags for sick photos and just generally getting stoked on everything great that he did. His board is the last thing I see when I leave the house before I skate.

    Its been a little over a year now and my life without Van will never be the same. This has been a lonely deal for me to face everyday. Everyone tells me how things get easier as time goes. For me it got just a little easier and that’s about it. Almost not even worth saying a little easier…I’m still trying to figure out how to move forward without Van. What are you supposed to do when someone is in your every weekly routine and 1 day, you don’t have that person anymore ever again.. Its pretty fuckin’ lonely.

    I just want people to know that Van was so loving and caring. He would give you the shirt off his back, or the last Tee shirt in his box…It didn’t matter if he had one deck left in his package. or a pair of pants. He was so generous and you just get that if you were that close to him….
    Van’s death has left my parents without their son, our sisters without a brother, the rest of my brothers without a brother, and sadly our nieces and nephews without their uncle.

    I still think about Van everyday and i look at all of the pictures of me and him through the years. I take my guitar and play music for him at the Conejo Mountain Cemetery. Thats all I have left.

    I am one hundred percent positive that no one has inspired me as much as Van Wastell, and that probably no one else ever will. He might even be the reason that I still skate.

    Also, I am a person who normally would not want to be anyone other than myself, but Van Wastell is one person that I always would have longed to have traded lives with. I wanted to be him.

    If there is a god, Van Wastell was without a doubt his gift to skateboarding.
