In memory of Johnny

I met Johnny and his family about 4 years ago at the Make A Wish Jam in Texas. It’s an old story but I’m an old guy and tell the same stories over and over again - sorry.
To see a child skating and going for it like he didn’t have a care in the world when in fact he had recently been diagnosed with a life threatening illness just touched me. Even now I can’t find words to describe how truly amazing it was. At the time my son was about 6 and Johnny just reminded me of my boy so much and I found myself selfishly thinking ‘what if that was my kid’ and I just couldn’t imagine ‘what if’. Speaking with his parents that day at the park - they were incredible. Strong, supportive, funny and caring people. The Romanos became part of our family. Not only of REAL’s family but of skateboarding’s collective family. Johnny came out and stayed with us. My son Jack stayed with them ( for his first real sleep over faraway from his home - but I knew it would be ok because the Romanos are that good). Skateboarding and skateboarders world wide were affected by Johnny’s story but also for his love and passion for skateboarding.
In a testament to how positive skateboarding truly is, skateboarders worldwide came together and showed Johnny and his family love and how much we all care for one of our own.
It makes me proud to say I am a skateboarder.
It makes me feel happy and lucky to have gotten to know Johnny and his family and it is with tears and a broken heart that I have to say good by to him.
He may be gone but he will never be forgotten.
Johnny Romano will truly Roll Forever - not only in my heart but in the heart of skateboarders and skateboarding.
Roll Forever Johnny.

For little Johnny Romano, he was an example of strength and will power, and a fighter, and stood up this disease with a lot more guts that any adult would’ve had. It’s for Johnny that im going to light up a candle and pray tonight, cuz pretty sure he has become an angel today looking for us from above.
Reast in Peace little buddy cuz down here we will allways remeber you and the impact you had in all of skateboarders lifes.

Some of us never get the acknowledgement of our talents or specialties until we are almost gone. This kid didn’t lay idle before his fire burned; he embraced it and took it to the limit. May his memories lead our conscience and help take us to our own limit.

September 23rd, 2008 at 6:11 pm
It’s been said that the best people in life are the people who make us feel the best about ourselves. Johnny Romano made others feel good about themselves, by letting us into his life, by letting us share in his experience and by letting us give, and by giving plenty back to us: hope, wisdom, joy, love. By being so full of life even as he was slowly dying, this little kid brought people together in a unity that made us all feel good to be skateboarders. I didn’t know Johnny well, but I am very sad to say goodbye.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:11 pm

Although he is gone, we can all know that hes resting comfortably now. Its nice to see how one person can bring so many people together, and for that I thank you Johnny. Keep merkin up in heaven!

johnny i love you man you were and always will be the heart of skateboarding. Rip In Peace.
September 24th, 2008 at 8:47 am
At these times I think the most common phrase is ‘you will never be forgotten’. And while to outsiders it seems to be just a simple endearing comment, a show of support, I think that in this case it’s true. As skateboarders, we are all deeply affected by the loss of one of our own. Johnny has passed on physically, but will live on forever in the minds and hearts of every skateboarder that knew of his struggle. When I heard the news, I said to myself it wasn’t possible. And it isn’t. Johnny will live on forever.
My love to the family, and to all his friends.
You too, are an inspiration to us all.
September 24th, 2008 at 8:53 am

September 24th, 2008 at 10:27 am
As a father of 5 children and still a skater/surfer, my heart is broken to hear the news of Johnny’s passing. Rest assured that he is VERY HAPPY and knows no pain or sorrow. Revelations 21:4 “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There won’t be death anymore. There won’t be any grief, crying, or pain, because the first things have disappeared.” My prayer is that God gives you peace in this extremely difficult time. Remember always, you WILL BE WITH JOHNNY AGAIN.
September 24th, 2008 at 10:27 am
Phillips, Robison, Brauch, Shao, Pat, Shane, RUnderhill. Van, and Johnny. This skateboarding community has lost some strong people. Somehow I get the feeling that there is a greater purpose here, for it is in these moments that we are brought together, physically or spiritually, as a community, and it reminds us, as skateboarders, of the greater aspects of what we do… skate on in Heaven, J-Grom,
September 24th, 2008 at 10:31 am
There are people that come into your life and leave a lasting impression that will stay with you forever, Johnnny was one of those people. I never knew Johnny, only from the daily updates on the blog, but he felt like a part of my family. Having a young son of my own, I am deeply saddened by the Romanos loss and am wiping away tears as I type this tribute. Just reading all the wonderful things everyone had to say about Johnny shows what a great and courageous person he must have been!
September 24th, 2008 at 10:41 am

I have never met Johnny but i fill as if i did reading about his life on g-townsurf.com Billy and Ruthi had so much concern and love for Johnny from reading there updates on Johnnys condition. I look forward to meeting him someday and telling him how much people cared about him even ones like myself that have never met him but embraced spirtually to his side. I actually fill better to no that he has no pain and will wake up feeling so healthy and good. I know this will be hard for Johnnys familey but it will help to no that Johnny would want nothing else but for his familey to smile…. even with tears,) as long as you smile that made Johnny happy, not to mention when he caught that nice wave and jump landed on his skateboard smiling… awesome! Johnny i will miss ya and your familey truley raised you well with a lot of love and continued love. Thanks Johnny for helping us realize how much we take life for granted your strong fight and encouragement….. wow, i cant go on…..All will miss and never forgottin.

I just found out about the Johnny Romano story from a swedish skate messageboard. I couldn’t go to sleep although it’s 4.35 AM, I had to read every post in the blog. This story really touched my heart and when I saw the BIG smile on Johnnys face when Tony Hawk & co. visited him at the hospital the tears were rolling down my cheeks.
I just wanna say thank you for reminding me that not take life for granted, I’ll try to live life at the fullest every day. Your spirit really inspirered me Johnny. Your family must be very proud of you. Big ups to the parents & rest of the family for hanging in there and being great.
Rest In Peace Johnny!

Id been covering johnnys story on faction radio and encouraging people to head over to the website and send love/ donations/whatever possible on a daily basis for the last year. Not just because it was a great way to support Johnny , but also because the courageous way he lived his life was something that everyone should get to take a look at.
To his family: I’m so sorry for your loss. I’ve been truly inspired by his life and your story. Im a jaded entertainment industry cynic that has been moved to tears by johnny many times as I wrote the news pieces covering him on faction. I feel tremendously lucky and inspired to have followed your story so closely. Johnny lived more of a life in his brief years on this earth than many of us will in a lifetime, and the love you and your family shared with him is a lesson to us all.
If there’s anything at all I can do in this time, or any way I can help get the message out about anything at all. Please dont hesitate to ask.
Best wishes, heartfelt prayers and condolences to you in this most difficult of times.
To Johnny, We’ll keep you and your life in our hearts always. Youre an inspiration and a lesson to us all. Thank you for the immeasurable gift youve given us
Roll Forever

Johnny’s story always touched me because my brother went through a similar situation when he was younger and actually had a Make-a-Wish trip that brought him out to visit SF and meet some of the DLX and Thrasher guys about 2 years before Johnny’s Make-a-Wish. It’s definitely sad news and I wish everyone who knew him the best right now. I’m grabbing my board and hitting the streets in a few minutes. R.I.P. Johnny

I have a son about Johnny’s age, too. Following Johnny’s story made me think of my little guy. Johnny and his family were in Dallas, but were gone by the time I realized they’d been in-town during Hurricane Ike. I wish I could have stopped in to see the family and pass along my family’s support.
I’m sorry my boy and I never met Johnny. My heart is breaking for his family.
