SAVE BORDERTOWN

August 31st, 2011

Built for the love of skating on the edge of West Oakland, the fate of Bordertown has been uncertain for seven years. We have been building and Caltrans has been destroying for the last two years, something like an unfriendly game of tennis. They finally wiped out larryland. It took several removals of single new obstacles for them to prove that was their land, which was stolen from Native Americans, but I digress. We have bent over backwards to meet their requirements. It took about four years of fundraiser parties, clean ups, and city meetings to do that. No easy task. There isn’t one issue that cannot be solved. We can be insured and I think we’ve proven we can build solid structures. Which brings us to our current situation. Friday morning Caltrans is coming for us. If anyone out there can convince Caltrans to stop this obscene act of destruction we ask you to do so. Whether it be urging a local or state politician to stop this or just coming out Friday morning and showing your support for a rad place to skate.

Sincerely,

Tony Miorana

R.I.P THE SPOT

August 25th, 2011

cops-spot

Today Skateboarding in the East Bay took a big hit. We lost a spot like no other, but the crews and friendships will live on forever. What was started down there can never be stopped, and will continue for years to come. Caltrans wasted an unbelievable amount of time, money, and energy on removing one of the most positive things that the East Bay skate scene had ever created all the while the State of CA cant even buy books for it’s schools. We built that place from the ground up with our own money, taught kids how to skate and build, hosted clean ups, built a community that could have thrived for years to come, and never asked the City or State for a cent. For almost two years we tried as hard as we could to contact Caltrans and the City to make it a legal park with no response. Spots come and go just like everything else in life but skateboarding won’t ever stop, they tear em down and we’re onto the next one. Thanks to everyone who built, skated, barbecued, bought beer, and just generally contributed and made that place rad for so long. See you guys at the next SPOT.

-Nate Alton

Thank you Sluggo for everything you’ve done in skateboarding and continue to do, skateboarding is in good hands with people like you involved.

Devon Blood Book Release

August 22nd, 2011

Thanks to everyone who came out Friday night to support our good friend and ultimate metalhead Devon Blood who just released his book Keep Laughing which chronicles his life, art and rehabilitation since being shot in the head in 2006. Truly humbled by the community that appreciates Devon’s difficult but triumphant story of learning how to make art again left-handed. And of course thanks to Ninkasi brewing for the delicious beverages.

Devon’s book is now available to order on his site.
