A Letter from Alex Midler

If you know me, you know that skateboarding is my passion. I came up with the idea of hosting the first annual "Roll-a-Thon" for the benefit of the Johnny Kicks Cancer Foundation. On Sunday May 22, at 11 a.m., we'll meet at Perry's Pizza and More Beach Rentals, on the strand north of the Santa Monica Pier (1200 Pacific Coast Highway, Santa Monica, CA). There is parking and they rent bikes. At noon, I will begin my 18-mile skateboarding roll down and back on the strand along the Pacific Ocean. We'll meet back at Perry's when we're done. Join me on the Roll-a-Thon by riding anything with wheels, like a scooter, bike or board. My parents will be biking alongside of me and my brother Todd will film the events of the day to document the "roll." If you are interested, e-mail me at alexmidler-at-yahoo.com.

My goal is to not only complete the 18 mile course but to raise money and awareness for a charity that is important to me. Johnny Romano was a young boy who loved skateboarding. He died of childhood leukemia 3 years ago after a very courageous struggle against the disease. Had he lived, he would have been my age today. The mission of JKC is "to cure childhood leukemia through awareness and funding for cutting-edge research, as well as to empower and encourage patients, families and doctors in their fight against the number one childhood cancer." There is a lot of information about the foundation, the disease and Johnny, on the website johnnykickscancer.org.

My target is to raise $2,500 in donations personally and to encourage my friends to hop on a skateboard, bike or scooter and join me in raising money for this worthwhile cause. You can donate online with a credit card by going to johnnykickscancer.org, clicking on the "Roll-a-Thon" button and following the instructions. (You can also make a donation by check or at the event.) I really appreciate you considering a donation to JKC in honor of the Roll-a-Thon.

Roll forever... Alex Midler
